Unless you are trading in some extremely narrow niche, like "chocolate coated razor blades", the process of achieving a top slot in the SERP’s could run in to 9-12 months (if at all) while the SE’s establish your ‘credentials’.

In fact, if an SEO company or consultant 'guarantees' to get you a Top 10 slot in the SERP's at all, be afraid and start looking for another company. If they say they use proprietary techniques to get you good rankings, turn and run.

Look very closely at any SEO money-back guarantee they might offer if they do not achieve the desired or agreed SEO results. There could be hidden clauses that absolve them of any responsibility for SEO failure.

Furthermore, you run a high risk of getting your website de-listed or even banned, due to the questionable techniques some cowboy SEO outfits resort to in their efforts to spam or fool the search engines. These shady SEO techniques are referred to as Black Hat SEO .

The difference largely between Black Hat and their White Hat counterparts, is that Black Hat techniques are designed for the search engines, whereas White Hat ethical SEO techniques are applied first-and-foremost for human consumption, the search engines being of secondary consideration.
