A Bit About Small-Biz-SEO.org

Small-Biz-SEO.org is a Cape Town, South Africa based website imparting SEO advice to small businesses looking to increase their traffic and income from their websites.

Small-Biz-SEO.org is essentially here to help you create or enhance your small business website through thoughtful and ethical search engine optimisation (SEO) to take full advantage of the growing amount of business being derived directly through the internet - business you cannot afford to ignore.

This site is in its infancy, and was only born in Sept 09, so forgive its sparse content. That is changing as you read.

About me..
I've been around a while. I had my first business website up live in January, 1995. (It was the 297th website to be registered in South Africa and, according to the WSJ, one of the first 4000 worldwide - there are some 200 million websites now). The site and business, a CRM (Customer Relationship Management) concern, has subsequently been sold, and is still going strong. (Read here for more about Small Business CRM.)

In those early days, SEO – (the term Search Engine Optimization hadn't been coined yet) - was not much more than including LOTS of Meta Tags with your pages. Heck, we even included the director's names of our competitors, the idea being that, if someone searched on their name, our website would also show up in the search results. And it worked... then.

Nowdays the search engine algorithms are a LOT smarter, and continuously evolving by degrees of magnitude - what was acceptable SEO practise then could very well get you banned from the search engines now.

Anyway, it's all about the customer, first and foremost. Not the search engines. Satisfy the visitor and you satisfy Google.

I have worked on contract as SEO for many sites in South Africa, including Top Billing (a TV program) , SafariNow (SA's largest holiday accommodation reservations site), GraphicMail (a multinational email marketing company) and numerous other smaller websites.

I balance work between my own sites (which generate most of my income but the least of my time - go figure), joint ventures and consulting contracts. If necessary, I use the services of several great people some live close enough for meetings, but all work mainly online and remotely.

For what it's worth, I'm a qualified SEO (link probably expired) but in this fast paced, subtle game there's no substitute for experience. Outside of working on my own websites, I restrict myself mostly to SEO consultations and website SEO audits.
